The Irish Autumn

A poem by Dr. Shruti Shankar Gaur (written during her Ireland visit in October 2022)

If you happen to visit Ireland
And that too in Autumn
Colors explode
A hue of blue
A Tinge of brown
Hundreds of shades of green
Orange merged with the red
A yellow with the maroon
You will witness the bounty
In its full bloom

If you happen to visit Ireland
And drive through the Wild Atlantic Way
You will be amazed
Sea merges into the land
Land gives way to the sky
Hills into the plains
Plains into the meadows
Meadows lead to wilderness
Until you feel heaven in your bones.

If you happen to visit Ireland
Be it any season or day
All five seasons one or the other way
You will experience in a single day
A moment ago it’s sunny bright
Another moment rain soaks you
The next one brings strong winds
Adamant to fly you away
You may wrap yourself in layers
Yet like a leaf, you will sway.

If you happen to visit Ireland
You will testify
Every color coexists
In the plan of supreme
Flourishing alongside together,
You will witness
The beauty in diversity
And you will wonder,
If nature can be inclusive,
Why can’t we be?

If I had been still in my twenties or thirties, I would have loved to visit New York Times Square or London’s Trafalgar Square. However, today, I look forward to places where nature showers its bounty. And Ireland is one such place, unexplored, unmanned, raw nature at its best. I was overwhelmed with the natural beauty so much so that words flowed through me in the form of a poem ‘An Irish Autumn’.   […]
