Deal with the Devil

Whom can we define as the devil?

Whom can we characterize as Divine or God?

My definition is simple: They are the two sides of the same coin.

If I am in awe of a person/phenomenon/object & I feel it is beyond human comprehension or capabilities I might put it in the bracket of God.

Ancient Indian culture defined every natural phenomenon into a Demi-God. So we have a wind God, Fire God, Rain God, Sun God etc. Back then, we were not aware: How does rain take place? Why does the wind blow? Why does fire generate heat & light? Or even what was fire?

Similarly, if I am afraid of a person/ phenomenon/ object; the fear will propel me to categorize it as the devil. The devil must be beyond comprehension, much more capable than mortal humans,  and something to be afraid of.

For instance, going out into the forest at night. The variables at play in such a scenario were numerous and the risk of danger was high. Hence, every culture created devils among monsters lurking in woods at night, serving as cautionary tales to avoid entering the darkness of the forests.

I recently met the devil again. Meeting the devil, de-calibrated me. Thus, I penned down my thoughts regarding the devil & my pact in the poem – Deal with the Devil

Deal with the Devil – A Poem

Long back,

I made a deal with the Devil,

At my own will,

Time & again

It has to be

Reissued & reinstated.

Every time life looked settled,

I became a calm river,

There was peace and serenity

In the air.

The devil peeped in

Reminding the deal,

“You promised to move with the cheese,

Always choosing learning upon stagnancy.”

Here, I was stable and comfortable,

The deal reminded me

The pain it shall be,

To begin anew.

My devil is every difficult situation I had,

For it propelled me to adapt

My devil is the failures I have faced

Because they have shaped my way.

The devil appears every now & then,

I have started to recognize its face,

I am aware it hides in my shadow

I am familiar, it’s divine with grace.

I dread it,

I am hesitant to change,

I pray the devil doesn’t appear again,

But like a true friend,

The devil ensures I play the game.

Thus, I get ready, I pull up my socks,

To jump off the cliff,

To discover a new life in new lands,

Just because, I made a deal with the devil,

Long back when I was born.
